This unit was produced for cars also but with lighter duty bearings and gear train. Produced in 2 and 4 wheel drive versions. |
F-100/F-150 | 1980-1983 | T170FS (Code-RUG) | Also known as Single Rail Overdrive (SROD). Has an aluminum case with shifter turret mounted on extension housing. Synchronized in all forward speeds with 4th being overdrive. Used in Ford light duty pickup trucks 1980-83. F-150 | 1988-Up | M5R2 | Mazda built 5 speed fully synchronized transmission found in 1988 to present Ford F150 series trucks and full size Broncos. Aluminum case, extension housing, and shift cover, with integral bell housing. Very similar in design to M5R1, but larger with shift lever located in center of shift cover. Available in 2 and 4WD versions. 1995 and later models have top cover reverse light switch moved to forward corner of shift cover. In 1996 case is changed to accommodate modular motor (4.6L), with starter bolt pattern being triangular. In 1999 the case was changed for 4.2L 4wd drive vehicles. The case is very similar to earlier style units with case length shorter on 4.6L and 4.2L models. |
F250, F30, F450, and Super Duty | 1987-1994 | ZF S542 | The S 542 Heavy duty 5 speed fully synchronized transmission with aluminum case and extension housing. The bell housing is integral to the case. Shifter is mounted to small shift cover on top of unit. Built in 2 and 4WD versions. This unit is used in Ford F250, F30, F450, and Super duty trucks from 1987-94. The Super duty model has a mechanical park brake assembly mounted to the extension housing. The S542 is found behind 300, 302, 351, 460, and diesel power plants. Great care should be taken to properly identify the unit you are working on as both the S542 and S547 appear to be the same and with the great variety of ratios available, it is easy to order the wrong parts. |
F250, F30, F450, and Super Duty | 1995-Up | ZF S547 | The S547 unit is used behind the same engines from 1995 to present. Both units have PTO covers on each side of case. On the left side of the case is mounted and ID tag, which gives the Ford Part number, the ZF part number and the unit serial number. Great care should be taken to properly identify the unit you are working on as both the S542 and S547 appear to be the same and with the great variety of ratios available, it is easy to order the wrong parts. |
Super Duty | 1998-Up | ZF S560 | An extremely heavy-duty unit with 6 forward speed. All gears are synchronized. This unit has an aluminum case with integral bell housing, a center support, and rear case. This unit is built in both 2 and 4WD versions. The S650 is found behind diesel engines of 1998 and up Ford Super duty and stripped chassis up to a gross combined weight of 26,000 lbs. The unit weighs in at 230 lbs. A unique feature of this unit is an internal oil pump driven off the front of the countershaft that circulates the lube to a trans cooler. An easy way to identify this unit is by the cooling lines mounted to the case as found in automatic transmissions. Id tags are mounted on the left side of the main case. |

Ford's F-Series emphasis for the early part of the 1970s was undoubtedly in the style department, as the company continued to inject car-like trim options into what most people considered a work vehicle.
1971 Ford F-100 Short Box White & Blue
Despite being primarily a carryover year, 1971 wasn't without change. Many of those changes were made by choice, while others were a product of the changing times.
1971 Ford F-100 Video
We are not affiliated with the producer of this video, we are including it here because it shows a really nice example of a 1971 F-100:
What's New For 1971
A redesigned grille that would adopt the nickname 'egg crate' made its debut in 1971. The new design maintained the vertical split in the middle, but added a single horizontal bar running from left to right, creating six prominent slots per side.
Ford continued to develop new trim levels and packages, including the Explorer trim package, of which the name would ultimately lead to another revolutionary Ford truck known today as the Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle. Asta power project crack codes for software.
Minor color changes graced the 1971 line as well as some mandated changes - notably the first exhaust emission systems and fuel vapor containment devices were installed for 1971. Horsepower levels in the F-Series would be relatively stable for a couple more years, but increasing emission standards would soon take a significant bite out of performance that wouldn't be recovered for at least a decade.
1971 F-Series Model Lineup
Keen to not interfere with a good thing, Ford stuck with the model and trim lineup revisions the company had implemented the previous year. Pickup shoppers could choose between the F-100, F-250, and F-350 with either Styleside or Flareside beds.
Sims 2 castaway mac torrent. These trucks could be outfitted with four trim levels, starting with the entry-level Custom and moving up to Sport Custom, Ranger, and ending with the Ranger XLT. Four-wheel drive was available for the F-100 and F-250, while Crew Cabs were offered for the F-250 and F-350. Camper Special packages were part of the F-250/F-350 family, offering heavy-duty equipment, wiring harnesses, and sliding rear windows to better accommodate slide-in camper shells, which were becoming quite popular.
Available in 1970 & 1971 was an available Electric Power Pak. This was an underhood generator that provided 110/120V AC power, for more details, see our 1970 Ford F100 page.
Engines / Powertrains
New exhaust emission control systems were mandated for 1971, though power ratings were essentially unaffected. The standard 240 cubic-inch inline six cylinder did lose 10 horsepower and 4 pound-feet of torque, but the other F-Series mills - all of which carried over from 1970 - were unaffected.
The three-speed manual continued on as the base transmission option, with the three-speed Cruise-O-Matic auto becoming more popular by the day. The four-speed manual was the only other transmission option; it was a popular choice for those seeking heavier duty applications.
